How to stay fresh in summer humidity

Here are the items you need to toss in your bag to stay fresh all summer long.

Dry shampoo

If you have fine hair that easily shows sweat or oil, you probably already keep one bottle of dry shampoo in your bathroom at home and another in your gym bag. If you don’t, run, don’t walk to buy some now. It’s clean-looking hair in an aerosol can.

To use dry shampoo, don’t hold it too close (about 6 inches away from your head), and spray it on the roots of your hair. It creates a white, powdery residue. Massage it in with your fingers and voila!

While I’ve never run into a dry shampoo that didn’t work, I’ve found that they commonly have strong fragrances. Personally, I prefer products that are either fragrance-free or have a mild scent.

I like Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-powder Très Invisible Dry Shampoo, but drug-store dry shampoo works just as well. My drug store go-to is Batiste Dry Shampoo in Bare scent.

Wet wipes

If you’re raising an eyebrow at this, you’ve never been on a New York subway platform in the height of summer. For those of us who know what it’s like to need a shower between our morning commute and the start of the work day- I love these Kleenex Gentle Clean Wet Wipes. Yes, I know that these are intended for kids with sticky faces. They’re great anytime for keeping hands clean, and also for freshening up before reapplying deodorant.

Deodorant stick

If you sweat frequently, either in the gym or in life, you already have one of these in your bag. I love Secret Clinical Strength antiperspirant in Free. I prefer to use fragrance-free products so that my signature scent is more pronounced.

Oil absorbing sheets

These are lifesavers for my combination skin. At the end of a long day, or after any time spent outside in the heat of the New York City summer, an oil absorbing sheet will have my face looking fresh again. I use Clean&Clear oil absorbing sheets, but any brand of oil absorbing sheets will do.

Caught in a public place without these? A paper toilet seat cover will do the trick, too. Yes, you read that correctly. Tear off a corner and dab the oil away.

Powder sunblock

This is a product you should keep in your bag all year round. Powder your nose to lessen the appearance of oil and reapply your sunblock all in one with a powdered mineral sunblock. I use Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-on Shield with SPF 50.

None of the above products are sponsored. These are genuine recommendations based on my personal experience.
